Powering the Future
Haliburton Wind and Solar
Haliburton Solar and Wind, a trailblazer in Ontario’s renewable energy landscape, is transforming how residents of the Haliburton Highlands and beyond power their homes. With a focus on off-grid solutions, this unique business combines cutting-edge technology with a deep commitment to sustainability, creating custom energy systems tailored to meet individual needs.
“Our mission is to provide options where there traditionally haven’t been any,” explains Joel Ideson, co-owner and master electrician at Haliburton Solar and Wind. “Whether it’s powering a remote property or reducing hydro bills for grid-connected homes, we deliver innovative solutions that make life easier and more sustainable for our clients.”
From Local Roots to Regional Impact
Founded in the Haliburton Highlands, the company serves a broad area, including Muskoka and Simcoe County. Co-owner Carolina Barberi highlights their specialty in off-grid systems and energy storage solutions: “Net metering and battery storage are growing trends. These technologies allow our clients to achieve greater independence and reliability, whether they’re off-grid or tied to the grid.”
The business itself practices what it preaches. “Our office is off-grid,” notes Barberi. “We understand the challenges and benefits firsthand, which resonates with our clients. That hands-on experience provides peace of mind for those venturing into renewable energy.”
Expanding Services and Expertise
When Ideson and Barberi took over the business in 2019, it was primarily a solar installation company. Under their leadership, Haliburton Solar and Wind evolved into a full-fledged licensed electrical contractor. “Adding this capability allowed us to expand the scope of our services,” says Ideson, who has over 25 years of experience as a master electrician.
The team has grown significantly, starting with three staff members and now employing multiple installers and office staff, with plans for further expansion. “Our ability to scale means we can handle more projects during the busy season, delivering exceptional service when it matters most,” says Barberi.
A Customized Approach to Renewable Energy
Unlike companies offering one-size-fits-all solutions, Haliburton Solar and Wind designs energy systems tailored to each client. “Every family has unique energy needs,” Barberi explains. “We create systems that reflect their lifestyle, ensuring they don’t just function but enhance their way of living.”
This dedication to customization has earned them praise from clients. Ideson emphasizes the importance of reliability, particularly for off-grid customers: “When the grid goes down, our clients can trust that their systems will keep running. That’s the level of assurance we aim to provide.”
A Greener, Quieter Way of Life
For clients transitioning to solar energy, the benefits go beyond cost savings. “With solar, you reduce your reliance on noisy generators and eliminate the off-gassing that comes with them,” Barberi points out. “You can truly enjoy your property and the serenity of nature without the hum of motors in the background.”
Grid-connected homeowners also reap environmental rewards. “Solar systems allow people to reduce their use of coal- and gas-generated electricity,” adds Ideson. “It’s a meaningful step toward a cleaner planet.”
Innovation for the Future
The renewable energy industry is rapidly advancing, and Haliburton Solar and Wind stays ahead of the curve. “Battery technology has come a long way,” Ideson explains. “Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries are now the gold standard for safety and reliability.”
Barberi highlights the potential of emerging technologies: “In the future, we may see energy-sharing systems where homes can supply power to each other during outages. It’s an exciting time for the industry.”
The beauty of the Haliburton Highlands inspires Ideson and Barberi daily. “This area offers unmatched opportunities for leisure and work,” says Ideson. “Installing systems overlooking forests and lakes is a unique privilege.”
