Supporting Local business

HCDC & the Link

Nestled within the heart of Ontario’s cottage country, the Haliburton County Development Corporation (HCDC) stands as a beacon of support for both businesses and the non-profit sector.

Through its various programs and services, HCDC has made a significant impact on the local community by promoting economic development, providing financial support, and fostering innovation.

A Community-Driven Vision

Patti Tallman, the Executive Director of HCDC, and Heather Reid, former Program and Operations Coordinator, share a unified passion for community development. “We are a not-for-profit organization funded by the Federal Government and governed by a Board of Directors. Our mission is to support economic growth in Haliburton County by offering business loans, advice, and community economic development services,” Patti explains.

For over a decade, HCDC has been a catalyst for growth in the region, disbursing over $100 million in loans to local businesses. But as Patti emphasizes, their work goes far beyond financing. “Our lending has enabled many businesses to expand or even start up. But we also connect them with external expertise, like the Industrial Research Council or the Business Development Bank of Canada, to help them innovate and grow. This is a key resource that has deeply impacted our community.”

The Link: A Hub for Innovation and Collaboration

One of the most significant recent developments spearheaded by HCDC is “The Link,” a co-working space designed to meet the needs of the local community, especially in the post-COVID era. Heather Reid has been instrumental in bringing The Link to life. “The idea for The Link came about after we noticed the need for a co-working space during COVID. We embarked on research to understand what new and emerging businesses needed and created this space as a response,” she says.

The Link provides a much-needed hub for the cottage community and local entrepreneurs, offering high-speed internet and flexible workspace options. It’s not just a place to work; it’s a space that fosters networking and collaboration. “The high-speed internet is crucial in Haliburton. Many people come here because they can’t access reliable internet elsewhere, and The Link provides that. It’s also a great way for home-based businesses to meet and network with others,” Heather adds.

Making a Difference

The impact of HCDC extends beyond the walls of The Link. Their Local Initiatives Program, funded by interest earned on their investment portfolio, is a unique feature of their community support strategy. “We lend to businesses, and the interest earned on those loans gets put back into the community through grants to non-profits. It’s a neat circle that has sparked amazing initiatives, from arts organizations to environmental advocacy,” says Heather.

Patti echoes this sentiment, noting that HCDC’s role in the community is multifaceted. “It’s not just about loans. We facilitate discussions, bring people together, and help businesses and non-profits navigate challenges. Whether it’s through strategic planning, accessing provincial and federal funds, or simply offering advice, we’re here to help.”

Physical and Community Expansion

HCDC’s recent move to a new location marks a significant expansion in both their physical presence and community outreach. The new office space is more than just a building; it’s a welcoming environment designed to foster collaboration. “We wanted it to be a place where people feel comfortable coming in, whether for a loan discussion or just to brainstorm ideas,” says Patti.

The space also houses several partner organizations, including the Chamber of Commerce, the Arts Council, and the County Economic Development Office. This proximity fosters “water cooler” interactions that lead to synergies and collaborations, making it easier for businesses and non-profits to access the support they need.

Looking to the Future with Heartfelt Dedication

As HCDC continues to expand, its focus remains on meeting community needs, especially in critical areas like housing. “We can’t tell municipalities what to do, but we can facilitate discussions and bring people together to find solutions,” Patti explains, highlighting the organization’s commitment to addressing housing challenges. Meanwhile, Heather envisions The Link as a thriving hub that generates funds to support the business community, particularly startups that currently lack sufficient funding.

The essence of HCDC’s success lies in its deep-rooted commitment to the community, driven by a board that prioritizes building the community over financial gains. “Our board members are incredibly dedicated,” Heather notes. This dedication is reflected in HCDC’s open-door policy, where individuals can engage in meaningful conversations and walk away with valuable insights, whether in the form of a loan, advice, or simply a productive discussion. In the Haliburton Highlands, HCDC is not just a development corporation; it’s a cornerstone of the community, fostering growth, innovation, and a vibrant, diverse region.
