Engineered in Cottage Country

Matt, Laura, and Brent – Heat-Line

Where sub-zero winters are the norm, Heat-Line has been helping people live and work year-round since 1988. This family-run company designs and manufactures advanced heating cable systems that prevent frozen water lines, roof damage, and septic issues in even the coldest conditions.

Founded by master electrician Lorne Heise, Heat-Line began as a local solution to a very real problem: how to extend the cottage season and make year-round living possible.

Laura Roberts, who now helps lead the company alongside her husband and brother, says, “Our products allow people to enjoy their properties in Haliburton all year long. We’re proud to keep growing right here where it all started.”

From Backyard Workshop to Global Reach

Lorne Heise’s early experiments with self-regulating heating cable technology led to the development of Heat-Line’s first major product: the Retro-Line in-pipe system, which remains the company’s flagship solution. With support from the Canadian Standards Association and years of research, he turned a home-grown idea into an award-winning business.

The company expanded its footprint in 2000 with a new facility near Stanhope Airport, and in 2014 added a dedicated R&D centre. According to Matt Roberts, Heat-Line’s Operations Manager, “We’ve grown from one building to over 20,000 square feet across three properties.”

Despite international sales, all operations, manufacturing, research, and customer service, remain based in Haliburton. “We’re planning for continued growth,” says Matt, “but we’re committed to creating more local jobs and staying grounded here.”

Family-Run and Community-Focused

Today, Heat-Line is run by the second generation, but the family dynamic remains central. “We all have clear roles, and we genuinely enjoy working together,” says Laura. Brent Heyes, who oversees sales and product development, adds, “It’s a tight-knit team, and that makes a difference in how we support our customers.”

One of Heat-Line’s strengths is its deep connection with the local trades community. Over the years, the company has built strong relationships with plumbers, electricians, and builders across the region. “Some of our partners have become close friends,” says Matt. “There’s a lot of trust there.”

Customers can purchase Heat-Line systems directly or through trusted tradespeople. Laura notes that “word-of-mouth is powerful in Haliburton. People know who to rely on.”

Designed for the Realities of Winter

From cottages and cabins to septic and sump systems, Heat-Line’s products are built to meet real-world challenges. Brent says, “We help people live comfortably in places where freezing is a serious concern. That’s our focus.”

Retro-Line remains a top performer, while newer systems like Retro-DWS and Retro-FM provide reliable protection for sewage and black water pipes. “These are situations where traditional heat tapes can’t be used,” says Laura. “Our systems offer a safe, efficient alternative.”

All of Heat-Line’s heating cables are self-regulating, easy to install, and job-ready right out of the box. “They save time, energy, and money in the long run,” Matt explains. “That’s why they’re trusted across so many industries.”

Built for the Future—Right Here in Haliburton

Even with its success, Heat-Line stays focused on continuous improvement. “Innovation is constant here,” says Brent. “We’re always developing solutions to new challenges.”

Future goals include growing the workforce with careers in design, engineering, and tech. “We want to offer real opportunities for people who want to live and work in the Highlands,” says Laura.

For those thinking of starting a business locally, she acknowledges that it takes effort but says, “It’s absolutely worth it.” Brent agrees, noting that Haliburton offers “a creative, relaxed environment where you can really focus on building something great.”

From its humble beginnings to its international reputation, Heat-Line is proof that innovation, family values, and a deep sense of place can thrive, right here in the Haliburton Highlands.
