A drive through the Haliburton Highlands is always a good idea, no matter the season. This day trip along Highway 35 offers a well-paced route that combines some of the region’s most  rewarding stops, all within a comfortable drive.

Starting in the Village of Minden, you can ease into the day with a great coffee or a locally loved breakfast before heading out to the rushing waters of the Minden White Water Preserve. From there, the route continues north through Carnarvon, where a stop at Haliburton Highlands Brewing offers a chance to relax on the patio. Along the way, you’ll take in scenic roadside highlights like Buttermilk Falls and, if time allows, explore the historic Hawk Lake Log Chute.

The day wraps back in Minden with a walk along the river, a visit to the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, and time to enjoy the local food and drink scene.

Start: Ease Into the Day in Minden

Before heading out to explore, take some time to fuel up in the Village of Minden.

If you’re in the mood for a great cup of coffee, stop by Up River Trading Co.. This welcoming café offers full barista service and a cozy atmosphere, perfect for easing into the day.

For something more substantial, grab breakfast at Toast, a local favourite known for its delicious morning fare. It’s a go-to spot for early risers and a great way to start your day with something hearty before hitting the road (just note, it’s a breakfast and lunch spot, so plan accordingly).

Trails Along the Moving Water

With coffee in hand or breakfast enjoyed, make your way to the Minden White Water Preserve. This natural whitewater park draws paddlers from across Ontario, but it’s just as rewarding for visitors exploring on foot. Trails on both sides of the river offer different perspectives of the rushing water. On the west side, Harrington Park features more rugged, narrow trails that feel closer to nature. Across the river, the Preserve side offers wider, more gradual paths with gentle elevation changes, making it accessible for a broader range of visitors. Plan to spend an hour or two here—watching the water surge through the channels, taking photos, or simply enjoying the sound and energy of the river.

Midday: Scenic Stops North Along Highway 35

Heading north on Highway 35, the drive itself becomes part of the experience, with winding roads, forest views, and plenty of worthwhile stops along the way. Make a stop in Carnarvon at Haliburton Highlands Brewing for a refreshing break. Their patio is a great place to relax with a cold drink and a quick bite before continuing on. Not far up the road, Buttermilk Falls offers one of the region’s most scenic roadside views. Long a favourite picnic spot, it’s an easy and rewarding place to stretch your legs and take in the cascading water.

If time allows, continue on to the Hawk Lake Log Chute. A short riverside trail and interpretive signage bring the area’s logging history to life, offering a glimpse into the industries that helped shape the Highlands.

Finish: Small-Town Charm Back in Minden

Loop back south to Minden to wrap up your day at a more relaxed pace. Take a stroll along the Minden Riverwalk, a scenic pathway that follows the Gull River and connects via a footbridge, creating an easy and enjoyable loop through the heart of town. Along the way, stop into the Minden Hills Cultural Centre, home to the largest collection of works by Canadian artist André Lapine. When it’s time to unwind, settle in at local favourites like the Dominion Hotel or Boshkung Brewing Co. for a well-earned meal or drink. If timing is on your side, you might even catch some live music—both spots are known for their vibrant entertainment schedules. And for a classic small-town treat, stop by Minden Rivercone for a soft serve ice cream before heading home.
