High-Tech Ice Production

Mike & Barb Croft – Hyland Ice

In the Haliburton Highlands, Hyland Ice has been keeping drinks cold and customers happy for nearly 80 years. What began in 1945 with hand-cut blocks from Lake Wilbermere has evolved into a modern, food-grade operation producing up to 100 tons of ice daily.

Deep Roots in Haliburton

The Croft family’s history in the Highlands stretches back to the 1800s, so starting the business here was a natural choice.

“It’s a beautiful, tight-knit community with increasing opportunities,” says owner Mike Croft. “Proximity to major highways and cities makes it strategic, and local organizations provide great support.”

From Sawdust Storage to State-of-the-Art Facilities

Founder Mel Croft started by cutting ice from the lake in winter, hauling it by truck, and insulating it with sawdust from a local mill. Over the years, he engineered clever solutions like a modified Model “T” ice saw and a conveyor powered by a “Putt” engine.

In 1968, Hyland Ice added its first ice cubers. By the mid-80s, Mel’s son Mike and his wife Barb joined the business, ushering in a period of major growth: acquiring other ice companies, expanding warehousing, and upgrading to automated, high-capacity production.

Today, Hyland Ice operates two advanced plants in Wilberforce with automated robotic palletizers, walking floor systems, stretch-wrapping, and proprietary software for real-time invoicing and logistics.

Supplying Ontario, One Bag at a Time

Hyland Ice delivers directly to big names like Sobeys, Loblaws, Canadian Tire, and Tim Hortons, while also supplying marinas, campgrounds, and local retailers. Their signature product, tube ice, features a hollow core that cools drinks faster thanks to increased surface area.

As certified food-grade producers meeting strict PEX standards, Hyland Ice follows international packaging and safety regulations, audited annually by a third party.

A Family Business Built to Last

At peak season, Hyland Ice employs nearly 30 people, with many returning year after year for the balance of summer work and winter recreation. “We’re lucky to live and work here,” says Mike. “Our staff love the lifestyle, and customers appreciate our reliable service.”

With a focus on quality, innovation, and community, Hyland Ice plans to keep growing for generations, ensuring that from dock parties to backyard BBQs, the Highlands will always have ice on hand.
