Crafting a Legacy

Chaulk (formerly Chaulk Woodworking)

In the heart of Minden, Ontario, a modest cabinet manufacturing business has blossomed into a cornerstone of the local economy and a beacon of innovation in the woodworking industry.

Chaulk (formerly Chaulk Woodworking), under the leadership of owner Trevor Chaulk, has not only carved out a niche for itself but also established a strong community presence, underscored by its commitment to quality, sustainability, and employee welfare.

A Passion Turned Profession

Trevor journey into woodworking began as a personal passion, nurtured over years of hobbyist projects. However, the real turning point came when he moved to Minden with his young family. “I moved up here, fell in love with the area… and decided to give woodworking a shot,” Chaulk recalls.

What started as a small operation in a garage quickly gained momentum. Today, Chaulk operates out of a 5,000-square-foot facility, employs nine people, and produces between 100 and 220 kitchens annually.

Commitment to Community and Quality

One of the hallmarks of the company is its deep-rooted commitment to the community. Trevor emphasizes, “We are proud because most of the business that we get is based on a referral business now… the community is behind us.” This community-first approach is evident not only in their customer base but also in their business practices.

The company prioritizes using Canadian materials to ensure high indoor air quality, a decision influenced by Trevor Chaulk’s personal experiences with his son, who has Asperger’s. “We will not lower our standards… just because of profit, it won’t happen,” he asserts.

Growth and Innovation

The path to success has not been without its challenges. From the 2013 flood that forced a relocation to navigating supply chain disruptions during COVID-19, the business has demonstrated resilience and ingenuity. During the pandemic, the company implemented a just-in-time manufacturing system and standardized customization to maintain timely deliveries. “We were on time or early for every single project,” Chaulk notes with pride.

Looking ahead, Chaulk is poised for further expansion. The company is developing an online design platform that will allow customers to layout and order their kitchen cabinetry with ease. This initiative aims to set a new industry standard by combining technological innovation with user-friendly design. “We’re setting the framework… for the customer we’re going to have in 10 or 15 years from now,” Chaulk explains.

A Vision for the Future

As Chaulk continues to grow, the company remains steadfast in its mission to improve the lifestyle of everyone around them, “one kitchen at a time.” With plans to expand into multi-unit projects and establish microcell manufacturing centers across Canada, the future looks bright. “We have aggressive goals… and we are going to keep the roots in Minden, but we will be expanding outside of the area as well,” says Trevor.

In addition to business growth, Trevor places great importance on fostering a positive work environment. “The satisfaction I have the most of is coming into work where everyone is happy, everyone wants to be here,” he reflects. This employee-first philosophy has not only contributed to the company’s success but also created a loyal and motivated workforce.

Inspiring Others

Trevor Chaulk’s story is one of determination, innovation, and community spirit. From humble beginnings to becoming the largest cabinet shop in Haliburton County, Chaulk exemplifies what can be achieved with passion and perseverance. As Trevor himself puts it, “If the community is behind you, you will do well.”

In the end, Chaulk is not just a business; it is a testament to the power of local support and the drive to make a difference. As they continue to expand and innovate, they remain a proud part of the Haliburton Highlands, committed to their roots and their community.
