A Sanctuary for Healing

Dimensions – Algonquin Highlands

In the heart of the Haliburton Highlands, Dimensions – Algonquin Highlands offers more than just a retreat—it’s a haven for deep healing and renewal. Under the guidance of Clinical Director Donald Currie, this unique wellness center blends ancient wisdom with cutting-edge neuroscience to help guests reset their central nervous systems and reconnect with themselves.

“We focus on creating an environment where people can activate what we call the inner healer,” says Currie. “It’s that part of us always striving for balance, and we just provide the right setting for it to flourish.”

The Dimensions Experience

Set on 42 acres of serene wilderness by Maple Lake, Dimensions offers a variety of therapies designed to foster psychological well-being. Guests can engage in psychotherapy, forest bathing, Qigong, and even cold plunges—all curated to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, a state where the body and mind naturally heal.

The facilities include 17 cabins, a lodge for clinical services, a float tank for deep relaxation, and a stunning geodesic dome for group activities like yoga and sound healing. “Every element here is intentional,” explains Currie. “The environment plays a critical role in the healing process, and we chose this location because of its natural beauty and biodiversity.”

The Perfect Location

Choosing the Haliburton Highlands was no accident. The region’s proximity to Toronto and the presence of the Stanhope Airport made it an accessible yet secluded destination. Currie highlights the unique terrain: “Being on the Canadian Shield, surrounded by hilly knolls, gives a sense of safety and serenity that’s rare in Ontario.”

The retreat’s location also aligns with Dimensions’ sustainability ethos. “We’re learning to be better stewards of the land,” says Currie, referencing their zero-waste kitchen, plastic-free initiatives, and solar-powered facilities. Inspired by Indigenous teachings, the team embraces the principle of protecting the earth for seven generations to come.

Supporting Veterans and Beyond

Since opening in 2022, Dimensions has grown to serve diverse audiences. Their programs include the Ascent wellness retreat, the Elevate program for military veterans, and a wellness series focused on relaxation without psychotherapy.

Their work with veterans has been particularly impactful. “We’ve helped around 60 veterans reduce symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression, improving their relationships, pain levels, and overall quality of life,” says Currie. “These changes ripple out, benefiting families and communities.”

Innovative Practices

Dimensions combines traditional therapeutic practices with cutting-edge research. Partnering with Queen’s University, they’re studying the efficacy of their programs and consistently achieving extraordinary outcomes. “In psychotherapy, a 10-15% improvement in symptoms is typical. Here, we’re seeing improvements of up to 600% in some cases,” Currie shares with pride.

This innovation extends to operational practices. From modifying equipment to accommodate snowy winters to using skis on housekeeping carts, the team continuously adapts to the challenges of a four-season environment.

A Vision for the Future

Dimensions is already planning to expand its reach with new locations in the Netherlands and South America. “Every retreat will have its own unique fingerprint, but we’re building on what we’ve learned here in Canada,” Currie notes. The team also plans to conduct further research into conditions like traumatic brain injuries and depression, refining their clinical offerings to maximize impact.

At its core, Dimensions is a labor of love. Currie credits the dedicated staff for their success: “We’ve built a team of deeply caring, highly skilled professionals who are in service to our guests. They’re the heart and soul of what we do.”

With its unique blend of science, nature, and compassion, Dimensions is redefining what it means to heal, one guest at a time.
