A Family-Owned Business

Glecoff’s Family Store

The Glecoff’s Family Store, has become a local staple since it opened its doors in 1995. A true family business, Amy and Clay Glecoff, who took over the store from Clay’s parents just three years ago. The history spans nearly three decades, evolving from a discount department store to a destination for high-quality, affordable merchandise that caters to the community’s diverse needs.

Amy explains, “We have an 8,000 square foot store, and with that comes a lot of responsibilities. We stock a wide variety of items – from clothing to shoes, household goods to perishables. My day is usually spent receiving new stock, answering customer questions, and working closely with our staff.”

Building a Local Legacy

Clay, who has been part of the Haliburton community since 1995, reflects on the store’s evolution: “I came to the Haliburton Highlands with my father when he purchased the store. I didn’t know what I was getting into, but over the years, I’ve learned the business inside and out. My wife Amy and I raised our two kids here, and we’ve enjoyed being part of this amazing community.”

Despite challenges over the years, the Glecoffs have successfully expanded their store. Clay says, “When my parents considered closing the store due to financial struggles, Amy and I decided to step in. We took the reins and worked hard to turn the business around. It was a tough few years, but we managed to save the store and grow it into what it is today.”

Why the Haliburton Highlands

The Glecoffs have deep roots in the Haliburton Highlands, which they believe is not just an ideal place to raise a family but also a perfect location to grow their business. “We couldn’t say enough good things about this county,” says Clay. “The people here have supported us throughout the years, and we feel a strong responsibility to give back.”

Amy adds, “We’re proud to support local fundraisers, events, and initiatives. Whether it’s donations for silent auctions or raffle tables, we’re always happy to participate. Being part of this community is so important to us.”

Innovating for the Future

One of the most significant changes in recent years was the decision to rebrand the store with the family name. “In 2019, we rebranded from V&S Stedman’s to Glecoff’s Family Store,” Clay explains. “It was a way for us to honor the legacy of my family’s history in retail. My grandfather had a grocery store in Oshawa, and my father grew up in that environment. Tapping into that heritage has been rewarding, and the community has embraced it.”

Clay continues, “We want our store to be a destination, not just a convenience. That’s been our goal – to offer something new and exciting each time customers visit. If people think of our store as a destination, they’ll keep coming back to see what we have.”

The Glecoffs have also made efforts to ensure that their product offerings cater to all demographics. “We sell everything from basic goods to higher-end products,” says Clay. “Our goal is to provide something for everyone, regardless of budget or background. We like to think that if we don’t have it, you probably don’t need it.”

Commitment to Sustainability

The Glecoffs are not only committed to serving the community but also to protecting the beautiful natural environment that Haliburton Highlands is known for. Clay explains, “We’ve recently made the switch to reusable shopping bags, and we have a strict recycling policy at the store. We’ve also retrofitted all of our lighting to LED, which has helped us reduce our energy consumption by about 25%. We want to keep this place as beautiful as it is, and doing our part for the environment is key to that.”

He adds, “The Haliburton Highlands is a stunning area with its many lakes and green spaces. By being mindful of how we operate, we help preserve that beauty, which in turn continues to attract both tourists and new residents.”

The Future of Glecoff’s Family Store

As they look to the future, Amy and Clay are optimistic about the store’s continued growth and presence in Haliburton. “We want to be here for many more years,” says Amy. “We’re dedicated to serving our customers and offering them quality merchandise that meets their needs.”

Clay echoes her sentiments, “We’re incredibly thankful for the support of our local customers and seasonal residents. Without the year-round support from our community, we wouldn’t be where we are today.”

Customer Service Above All

What sets Glecoff’s Family Store apart from other retailers is the emphasis on customer service. Clay believes that it’s what keeps customers coming back. “In Haliburton, we don’t have the same options that big cities have. Our prices might not always be the lowest, and our selection might not always be the largest, but we make up for that with exceptional service. If we don’t offer better service than our competitors, there’s no reason for people to shop here.”

As the Glecoff’s Family Store continues to grow, Amy and Clay are committed to maintaining that personal touch. “We’re looking forward to many more years of serving the people of Haliburton Highlands,” says Clay. “This store is part of the community, and we’re proud of what we’ve built.”
