Framing Memories and Fostering Creativity

Scott Michael Walling @ Haliburton Framing and Photo

Scott Michael Walling breathes new life into old memories and fuels the creative energy of local artists through his dual enterprises: Haliburton Framing & Photo and The Space.

“We are fundamentally a framing and photo shop,” Walling explained. “I do custom framing, restoration for old photos and artworks, media transfers, and more. Anything involving preserving or elevating photos or art, I can help with.”

Across the alleyway from his frame shop lies The Space, a dynamic gallery that offers artists a venue for solo and group exhibitions, artisan markets, and workshops. “It’s a vibrant, ever-changing space where creativity thrives,” Walling added.

Choosing Community Over All Else

When Walling decided to take over Haliburton Framing and Photo from its previous owner, Luke Schell, his motivation was clear: community.

“The Haliburton Highlands has such a vibrant art community that I feel so at home here,” Walling shared. “Being able to create and connect with like-minded people who value art and community—it’s a vibrant, lovely place.”

Walling’s admiration for the area extends beyond its natural beauty to the people who make it special. He sees his work not just as a business but as a way to contribute to the broader cultural fabric.

Preserving History, Enhancing Lives

At Haliburton Framing and Photo, Walling transforms old and damaged memories into treasured keepsakes. Whether restoring an antique family photo or creating custom frames for thrifted art, Walling helps clients celebrate their stories.

“Seeing the look on someone’s face when they pick up a restored family photo or a beautifully framed artwork is incredibly rewarding,” Walling said. “It’s meaningful to help preserve these memories so they can be displayed proudly.”

Walling also highlights the educational aspect of his work, surprising clients with what’s possible through modern restoration techniques. “People are often amazed at how we can enhance an image or even discover new details they hadn’t noticed before, like an overlooked family member in the background of a group photo.”

The Space: A Haven for Artistic Expression

Walling’s expansion into The Space reflects his commitment to providing opportunities for local artists. “Having a gallery space so close to the frame shop made perfect sense,” Walling explained. “It’s a place for artists to showcase their work, host workshops, and connect with the community.”

Exhibitions at The Space are intentionally short, lasting four to six weeks, to keep the offerings fresh and varied. “If you didn’t make it in, you’ve missed it—but there’s always something new around the corner,” Walling said.

Future plans for The Space include hosting more community events and possibly partnering with traveling exhibitions to bring new perspectives to Haliburton.

Small-Town Collaboration and Big Dreams

Walling’s success is bolstered by strong local partnerships, including his collaboration with Parker Pad and Printing. “Having a local partner is invaluable,” Walling said. “They do fantastic work, and their proximity makes logistics so much easier.”

Looking ahead, Walling envisions expanding his custom framing services to include one-of-a-kind frame designs. “I want to create truly unique pieces that elevate the art even further,” he explained.

Walling’s work at The Space also continues to evolve. “I want it to be a flow space, adaptable to what artists and the community need,” he said.

A Legacy of Connection

For Walling, being a business owner in Haliburton is about more than providing services—it’s about fostering a sense of belonging. “It feels great to support local events and to know that what I do helps build connections within the community,” he said.

With Haliburton Framing and Photo and The Space, Walling is not only preserving the past but also inspiring the future. His dedication ensures that the vibrant art community in Haliburton Highlands continues to thrive.
