A Hidden Gem for Paddling and Adventure

By Devon Proulx

I first discovered the Minden Whitewater Preserve through my family, who had been visiting long before I could paddle a boat. It’s not just where I learned to kayak, it’s where I found a community, formed lifelong friendships, and fell in love with the river lifestyle.

Nestled along the scenic Gull River just outside of Minden, Ontario, the Preserve is a hidden gem for paddlers, campers, hikers, and bikers alike. It’s a peaceful, back-to-nature kind of place with no bells or whistles. Just the sound of water rushing over rocks and the occasional laughter from a campfire.

Whether you’re here for a weekend camping trip or a quick paddle session, the Minden Whitewater Preserve offers something for every kind of outdoor enthusiast.

World-class Whitewater Kayaking and Canoeing

For paddlers, the Gull River delivers world-class whitewater in a low-key setting. Whether you’re brand new to the sport or training for national races, there’s something here for every skill level.

Our boat loaning program is free to all Whitewater Ontario members. It includes kayaks, canoes, paddles, and gear, making it easy for beginners to give it a go without a big investment.

More than just paddling

If you’re not quite ready to hit the water, there’s still plenty to explore. The Preserve is home to 7 km of mountain biking and hiking trails, including my personal favourite: the Ridge Trail. It winds through quiet woods with beautiful river views, and if you’re feeling adventurous, a bit of off-trail bushwhacking leads you to a secluded quarry lake, one of the best-kept secrets on the property.

Camping at the Preserve is simple but comfortable. There’s space for tents and trailers, firewood available by the cartload, and a self-serve kiosk for easy check-in. The campground is open to the public from April through October, and no Whitewater Ontario membership is required to stay overnight.

It’s the kind of place where you fall asleep to the sound of the river and wake up ready for a new adventure.

A welcoming Outdoor Community

While the Preserve often hosts competitive paddling events throughout the summer, its spirit is far from exclusive. Even on a regular weekend, you’ll meet folks from all over Ontario who’ve made the Minden Whitewater Preserve their second home.

The river might not be the biggest, and the campground isn’t flashy, but the community is something special. Whether you’re here to paddle, hike, or just unplug for a weekend, it’s the kind of place that stays with you.
